School
Districts
We
believe that professional looking sites need to steer away from overly
complex multimedia presentations. Constituents of school districts,
with the possible exception of some of the students, expect less flash
and more clearly defined information. We believe that at the district
level the site should be user-centric. You want it to be an important
source of accurate data that can be accessed easily without surprises,
pop-up windows, and the need to download browser add-ons to run programs.
Take a look
at your district's goals for the site
We like to sit down with a district's communications people, superintendent,
or others interested in a great Web presence and think about the mission
for the site. It's not just a matter of what you want to tell people,
it's important to think of it from the standpoint of what they want to
know.
A team approach
is good
Look for someone from each of your departments to provide input to EdWeb.
Transportation, curriculum, financial services, human resources, food
service, are just some of the areas supplying data for the site. Your
current site may have a great deal of the information needed, but those
who live with the material will have ideas on how it can be improved this
time around. We find it good to have one individual, say the school's
communication officer, to channel information through.
Organization
- a critical element
Getting lost in a Web site is very easy. Our aim is to always help viewers
know where they have come from and how they can get to the data they need.
Links must work and be clearly available.
Maintenance
is important
Updating material is vital to keeping the traffic flowing to your site.
Broken links must be fixed and some pages, especially those devoted to
"the latest news" must be changed at least weekly. EdWeb can
work with you to provide easy updating, either through training district
personnel or through an extended and relatively inexpensive contract to
maintain the site.
Business, industry, and institutions
Our approach is basically the same as with schools and school districts.
What is the audience for the site? How can we make it easy for viewers
to find what they need? What are the goals of the business or institution?
We perceive one of our roles as that of reflecting the style and spirit
of the organization. We thoroughly enjoy visiting with company leaders,
especially those responsible for planning, and gathering the information
needed for a great site. It does take a team to make it all work.
