WA-ACDA 2010 Summer Institute:  July 21-23, 2010

WA-ACDA wrapped up its fifteenth annual Summer Institute on July 23rd. President Marc Hafso and Program Chair, Lori Wiest announced that the session had 216 registered for the three day event held at the University of Puget Sound, Tacoma, Washington.

The team of Sandra Snow and Jonathan Reed, both from Michigan State University, headlined the event. Snow and Reed enjoy a wonderful national reputation as conductors and teachers. Their material in each of their sessions was entertaining, full of great idesnow-crameras, and presented beautifully.

Five conductors volunteered to work with Jonathan and Sandra in the conducting session held Thursday evening. April Duvic, (Vancouver), Heidi Blythe (Seattle), Penny Cramer (Auburn), Lauren Carley (who gave her address as "USA"), and Jeshua Franklin (nanceSeattle) each conducted a piece with the session attendees serving as the choir.

Late Wednesday afternoon, Karen Fulmer, President-Elect Designate for the national ACDA, presented the annual Leadership and Service Award to Dr. Richard Nance. Richard has served as president of Washington's ACDA and most recently was president of the NW Division, leading the way in the divisional conference held in Seattle this past March. He has been active in ACDA since moving to Washington in 1992. He is the Director of Choral Activities and conductor of the Choir of the West at Pacific Lutheran University. (Read more...>)

davisonDan Davison of Puyallup was presented the first annual "Outstanding Choral Director" award by past-president, Leora Schwitters. Dan has taught at Ballou Junior High School in Puyallup for 30 years. His choral work has been consistently superb and he has developed a huge "following" in the past ten years as an arranger, composer, and as one who knows thoroughly how to write for middle school aged singers. Dan has dozens of titles in print, many in the Walton catalog. (Read nominating letter...>)

Amy Fuller from Sumner was named the "Outstanding Young Choral Director." This award, too, was a first time award as the WA ACDA board looked to find ways to recognize superior work by its members. In the short time she has taught choral music Amy has demonstrated outstanding skills and developed choirs with marvelous tone. She brings "unending" energy to her work and connects bfullereautifully with her students. (Read nominating letter...>)

Repertoire and Standards chairs selected outstanding presenters who led reading sessions in various categories. The selections included many new pieces but did not neglect those that fall into the "tried and true" category.

Lori Wiest, Director of Choral Music at Washington State University, and President-Elect for WA ACDA was program chair for this well-planned and well-run event. Lori was quick to point out that every board member contributed greatly to the success of the 2010 SI.

A board retreat convened at 2:30 following the conclusion of the Summer Institute on Friday, the 23rd of July. The meeting summarized the 2010 SI and got a good start in planning the 2011 event. After spending the afternoon in evaluation and planning, the board continued in informal discussion following dinner. They convened in formal discussion on Saturday, July 24, meeting from 9 a.m. until noon.

J. W. Pepper of Tacoma got high praise from the board and officers for the work done by Pepper staff on behalf of WA ACDA.
